United boss scoops Championship award

CHRIS Hughton is set to collect the Championship manager of the month award in recognition for Newcastle United's flying start to the season.

thanks in large part to caretaker boss Chris Hughton's careful stewardship, Newcastle are top of the league after the first month of fixtures.

United signed off before the international break with a 1-0 success over Leicester City, their fourth win in a row.

It also means Hughton's side go into Sunday's showdown with third-placed Cardiff City unbeaten this season, having only dropped points in the opener at fellow favourites West Bromwich Albion.

Going into the season, former Tottenham Hotspur No 2 Hughton – who is assisted by Colin Calderwood – had only won one game in his two previous spells as caretaker manager, after he stepped into the breach after Kevin Keegan's controversial exit and when Joe Kinnear was taken ill.

However, Hughton's side followed up their 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns with successes over Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Crystal Palace and Leicester.

And United go into the weekend two points clear of Roberto Di Matteo's much-fancied West Brom, who lead Dave Jones's Cardiff by a point.
